CHAPTER 19

Elise

‘Would someone please explain why I am sitting in the middle of a field at seven in the morning?’ Luca said, peering around at the group. ‘The sun is already strong, I forgot my hat, my head is going to burn, and I don’t see what can be so urgent that it can’t be said in the main camp, preferably with a bowl of stew clasped between my hands.’

Elise looked around at her original companions, whom she had asked to meet with her as soon as she’d returned to Uracil. None of them seemed that impressed by her urgent request for a meeting, especially as she had banned them from bringing anyone else with them. These were the people Elise trusted more than anyone else. Not just in the usual sense of the word; she also trusted them to be brave when it was most needed.

‘I have to agree with Luca,’ signed Samuel, who seemed unable to look directly at Elise.

Luca gave him a broad grin. ‘Thanks, Samuel.’

Samuel tapped his forehead. ‘We’re not in the museum any more. We can’t creep off together like this. People will get ideas.’

Elise tried not to think about whom Samuel was referring to.

‘That’s what I want to talk about,’ she signed. ‘Back when we were in the museum and decided to leave together, did we really imagine that this would be the end result? That we would be hiding away with a group of people who are getting picked off by the Potiors?’

Glancing at each other, they all shifted uncomfortably. Elise had a sudden suspicion that they had been discussing her while she was away.

‘We’re all so sorry about your mum, Elise,’ Georgina signed. ‘But we have to concentrate on keeping everyone who’s left safe.’

Elise was not disheartened. She had been expecting this.

‘There’s a spy in Uracil and we all know it. So, we might as well be open about it. While they exist, Uracil will never be safe.’

Samuel’s face fell. ‘I didn’t think that was common knowledge.’

‘It is when you’ve got half a brain,’ Georgina signed, after dropping the blades of grass she had been rolling between her thumb and fingers. ‘What I can’t stop thinking about is how those airplanes knew where we were. There weren’t any ground troops that came close to us. Our scouts would have seen them. Instead, the planes just flew directly for us.’

‘I think the Potiors have known about Uracil for years,’ Elise signed. ‘They know about all the islanders around here. So why wouldn’t they know about Uracil too?’

Luca’s eyes widened. ‘But why wait? If they’d known about us for ages, why didn’t they come for us before?’

Elise had known this question would be raised, and she had to tell them her suspicions if she was going to convince them to go along with her plan.

‘I think it’s because Uracil set its sights outwards. It had a policy change to take proactive action against the Potiors, which must have gotten back to them.’

Kit stared at her.
